Wood rattles: all of these rattles are made with Black Walnut, Birch and Bloodwood. There are ten !/4 inch and five 3/8 inch steel balls for the percussion. The balls will also roll around the inner circumferance giving a special sound that irregular shaped materials would not provide. Intended for either musical / recreational or ceremonial purposes. They have not been blessed or dedicated for ceremonial use. |

Aspen Burl bowls. Left: 11" diameter. Right: 7 " diamter with glass bowl insert. Both pieces are from the same Aspen Burl. The wood was very fragile and much of it came apart during the turning process but these incredible pieces were left. Generations of ant colonization also left intersting profiles in the wood. A neighbour gave me a Birch Wood burl that he had found growing around a young birch tree. He had taken it home and later gave it to me to work with. I had that piece in my shop for about 18 months before I took it and created this piece. I did not want to really alter the unique character of the burl but I also wanted it to be opened to show the internal grains and colours. |
I added a small clear glass bowl to increase its funtionality. It is finished with Danish Oil and then a top coat of Krylon clear satin finish. I have returned it to the person who gave it to me. Ref: MIN_Burl |

Last fall I set aside two aspen logs that seemed particularly dense and had colour showing in cross section. I recently opened the log and turned 5 small, 6 inch diameter, bowls. The creamy white and red-brown colours give it a very rich appeal. |
